Irish Surprise

I wouldn't describe myself as superstitious, but sometimes something happens that causes me stand back and wonder: Is this a sign? a message from the gods?

When my daughter returned from a recent trip to Ireland, she brought me a nice bottle of fine Jameson whiskey, along with coasters bearing the King family crest. I was surprised that a book was part of the crest. I was also intrigued by the motto under the book, "Maireann a sgrioghtar." According the coasters' package, the words mean, "History cannot be destroyed."

Kinda boring. (Just the motto, Katie. I love the coasters!) So today, while struggling to complete a sentence and wondering, once again, what kind of nut case actually chooses to become a writer, I was staring at one of the coasters. I then Googled the King name and family motto. I found the same Irish words but with a different translation. This one read: "That which is written, lives."

I'm taking that one as a sign.

What are the signs that you are fated to do what you do?

  1. Your sign continues to expand, that's all I gotta say. Did you know that I've taken on three pseudonyms and they're all ending with KING? Plus, I've named myself "Three Kings Books." So it's a sign for me, too! (My father's first name, believe it or not, was King, which is why I went with that name....)

  2. And a fine sign it is, Jody! I love that your dad's first name was King. I've thought I should reverse my name, since it seems that every time I go through airport security and show my driver's license, the agent invariably says, "Ah! King James."

  5. Many years ago, my mother introduced me to a psychic friend of hers. Until this point in my life, I'd never given much thought to the psychic world. After visiting with her for several hours, she said, "You're going back to college. What do you plan to study?" My thought... my mother must have told her that. I said, "Something with computers." She shook her head and frowned. "No," she said, "I see you as a healer. But not of people." She smiled. "And you'll never truly be happy unless you're writing." My mother laughed and said, "She doesn't write." Her friend turned to her with the look of, "Have you lost your mind, woman?" My mother turned to me and asked, "Do you write?" I nodded in confirmation. Being an avid book lover, my mother grinned from ear to ear. To make a long story short, I went back to school and became a Registered Veterinary Tech (healer, but not of people) I've also spent many late night hours, typing away, creating stories and writing medical case studies for colleagues. A sad note on my mother's part... her friend told her it would be decades before I allowed my children (stories) to see the light of day. Well, it's been decades and my mother's wish is to see my picture on the back cover of a book in her favorite bookstore. "Some day," I keep telling her.

  6. Thank you for writing this! I, too, went to Ireland and found the King family crest coasters, and was just researching the motto. It is wonderful to finally know the meaning. Thank you, again.
